An exoskeleton to fight brain damage wins the Empreendaa Saúde Brazil Award 2019
The startup has created a brain-controlled exoskeleton to help brain-damaged patients recover
everis Foundation has designated Eurobots as winner of the fifth edition of the Empreenda Saúde Brazil Award 2019 for their brain-controlled exoskeleton capable of bringing about remarkable improvements in patients who no longer show evolution with conventional methods.
The exoskeleton provides a mental practice so the patients imagine themselves moving their affected hand, even if they cannot move it. In this way, the system identifies the brain pattern and activates the exoskeleton, causing the user to close and open their hand for exercises.
The startup has shown that, by performing this exercise for 40 minutes for two weeks, it is possible to permanently change the neuronal connections, structuring a new neuronal pathway that helps in the recovery of the hand.
Antonio Carlos Valente, president of everis Foundation in Brazil, has pointed out that this solution is extremely relevant as it may benefit a large number of people, considering that on average 1.5 million Brazilians suffer strokes according to WHO. ‘After a stroke, a person faces great challenges to regain physical function; the support of creative and effective solutions such as Neurobots can be essential for their recovery. This is quality of life. This was one of the reasons why this solution was the winner," Valente said.
Neurobots receives an award equivalent to R$ 50 000 reais together with consulting services by everis. Besides, the startup will represent Brazil in the everis talent week in Spain, to be held from 26 to 28 November, where the winner of the global everis Award will be announced.
